COVID-19 may have led to a spike in antibiotic resistance

A new study suggests that the number of antibiotic-resistant infections increased in the United States during the pandemic. The jump in antibiotic resistance in hospitals was particularly high in patients with COVID-19.
The researchers find that increased antibiotic prescribing and reduced infection control during the crisis may be partly responsible. In contrast, the incidence of resistant infections originating in the general population appeared to decrease during the pandemic.
